Heading into the final round of the Travelers Championship, at TPC River Highlands, Dustin Johnson sat two behind leader Brendon Todd. Dustin was going for his 21st PGA TOUR title and 13th season in a row with win.
Dustin got off to a slow start on Thursday shooting a one-under 69. At the time, Dustin was in a tie for 79th place and nine shots back of first round leader, Mackenzie Hughes. Dustin went off early on Friday playing alongside Collin Morikawa and Jordan Spieth. After making the turn at two-under 33, he tallied four birdies on his second nine and carded a second round 64 that left him four back heading into moving day.
Saturday at the Travelers saw all the tee times moved up and players going off split tees due to impending severe weather. After birdies at two, four, seven, and nine Dustin was fighting for the lead. It did not stop there. After a birdie on ten, and a sand save on 11, Dustin rolled in a 21-footer for birdie on 12. On the par five 13th, Dustin found the middle of the fairway and left himself 234 yards. He was able to get it up and down to move to seven under on the day. On the home stretch Dustin added two more birdies to shoot nine-under 61. This 61 was his lowest round of his PGA Tour career and had him two back headed into Sunday.
Though Saturday was a career day for Dustin, he knew he had work to do to catch Brendon Todd. Dustin made birdie on the 4th hole and 239-yard par three 5th hole. Missing the 7th green just long left, Dustin was unable to get it up and down leading to his first bogey of the day. That bogey did not faze him, he birdied the 8th and 9th to make the turn in three-under 32. Dustin stepped to the 15th tee after a bounce back birdie on 14. His tee shot found the long grass just to the left of the drivable par four. Dustin’s second shot did not find the green leaving him a tough uphill pitch shot. After hitting a great chip to three feet, Dustin made the putt to save his par. Dustin brought it home making par on 17 and 18 to shoot a final round 67.
The win at TPC River Highlands was Dustin’s first Travelers Championship victory and 21st PGA TOUR title. This win vaulted Dustin up to the 3rd ranked player in the world and 22nd in the Fedex Cup. Next up for Dustin, the Memorial Tournament.
